What is a virtual run?

A virtual run is an official race you complete on your own route instead of a closed course. You register, you run the distance inside the race window, you submit GPS proof, and the organiser verifies your result and ships your medal.

In Malaysia, virtual running grew out of the need for flexibility: shift workers, parents and runners far from Kuala Lumpur or Kuching can take part in a national event without travelling or waking at 3am for a flag-off.

How a virtual marathon is verified

  • Record every run with a GPS watch or a phone app such as Strava, Garmin Connect, Nike Run Club or Apple Fitness.
  • Screenshot each activity so the date, time and distance are readable.
  • Only runs recorded after your registration is confirmed count.
  • Accumulated runs are allowed — several activities can be added together to reach your total distance.
  • Manually entered, cropped or edited activities are rejected at verification.

Staying safe on your own route

A virtual run has no marshals, water stations or medical crew. Plan a loop near home so you can refill, run in daylight where possible, carry ID, and tell someone your route and expected finish time before you set off. On public roads you remain a road user, not a race participant.

Common questions

Is a virtual marathon a real marathon?

The distance is identical. The difference is the course: you run 42.2KM on your own route inside the race window and submit GPS proof instead of crossing a physical finish line.

Can I walk part of a virtual run?

Yes. There is no pace requirement and no cut-off inside your batch window, so walking sections are allowed.

Do I need a treadmill or a GPS watch?

A phone running app is enough. Treadmill runs are acceptable when your screenshot clearly shows the date, time and distance.
